I’ve been writing for magazines — mostly about photography — for 25 years. First published in The British Journal of Photography and Petersen’s Photographic, I became the features editor and eventually a longtime contributing editor for Outdoor Photographer and Digital Photo Pro. I served briefly as editor of Digital Photo before its demise in 2023 and have recently contributed to Wild Eye magazine and the new Outdoor Photographer.

As print magazines began disappearing I started crafting editorial-style content for photography brands — most notably a long-running column at Sony’s AlphaUniverse. And now, thanks to the 2025 relaunch of Outdoor Photographer, I am fortunate to once again interview world class photographers about their passion projects.

Several instances of generalized nonsense and meticulous whimsy with my name on it have been published in McSweeney’s, Morning Moot, Yankee Pot Roast and elsewhere. I co-created the short films “A. Anonymous” and “Roy: The Man, The Myth, The Barber,” and contributed to the cult classic web series “Inside the Actor’s Studio Apartment.” I once spent a full year buying only American-made products and wrote about it on the “Bye, American” blog. My graduate thesis reframed the Neoplastic principles of Dutch painter Piet Mondrian in a photographic context, and if you’re really hard up for reading material you can download it here.

I’ve had projects featured on ABC News and included as required reading at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. 💰

The following selection of profiles features singular photographers who have shared generously of their time and expertise.

“I think it’s important not to draw attention to one’s technique and let the picture speak for itself. Let the viewer get absorbed in the emotion, or the story you’re trying to tell.”
– Steve McCurry
